DALLAS - Derek Jones delivered a three-run double in the top of the ninth inning and Washington State scored four times in the frame to defeat Dallas Baptist 5-2 in nonconference baseball, Wednesday.
With the Cougars (11-4) trailing 2-1, Cody Bartlett, who was 3-for-3, was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Garry Kuykendall beat out a bunt single and both runners moved up when Dallas Baptist (10-7) reliever Ryan Bahmanesh (1-2) threw the ball away. Shea Vucinich walked to load the bases and set the table for Jones's heroics. Brett Jacobs capped the rally with a single that scored Jones and gave WSU a 5-2 lead.
Adam Conley (1-0), the Cougars' fourth pitcher of the game, pitched two perfect innings and struck out three to earn the victory.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the third when Bartlett singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Vucinich. The Patriots scored two runs, one unearned, in the fourth off Cougar freshman starter Bret DeRooy.
The Cougars open a three-game series at Wichita State, Friday at 7 p.m. Central/5 p.m. Pacific.
WSU has 51 extra-base hits this season...Cougars stole four bases in the game...freshman pitcher Bret DeRooy made his collegiate-debut and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits in three and two-thirds innings during his start.
