WANT TO COMPETE? OR JUST WATCH: All competitors are to register online no later than noon, Jan. 19, at www.DirectAthletics.com for a $5 entry fee...late entries will be charged $15 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators may watch Friday's events free of charge but a $5 per person admission fee will be charged Saturday...free parking is available in the Yellow Lot between Beasley Coliseum and the WSU Tennis Courts or behind and below the IPF in the newest parking lot on campus.

NATIONAL POLE VAULT SUMMIT: WSU will send a pair of pole vaulters to the National Pole Vault Summit at Reno this weekend...senior men's captain Paul Nicoletti (5.15m / 16-10 3/4i) and junior Tamara Diles (4.35m / 14-3 1/4i SR)...two of their teammates are also attending on their own, redshirt sophomore Tyson Byers and freshman Shelley Bunday.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Two Cougars have been included in Trackwire Online's Dandy Dozen lists, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event...2004 All-American Danny Wolf is ranked 11th in the 3000m and Diana Pickler is ranked 10th in the pentathlon.

RETURNING COUGAR CHAMPIONS: Three Cougars who have won events at the WSU Open in the past two years are expected to defend their titles...last year, Diana Pickler won both the 60m hurdles (8.59) and long jump (MR 5.60m/18-4 1/2) while Nicole Hatcher took the 200m (MR 25.39), and Robin Mikesh the high jump (1.70m/5-7)...the 2004 pole vault champs, Paul Nicoletti (5.00m/16-4 3/4) and Tamara Diles (MR 4.00m/13-1 1/2) as well as 2003 champ Tyson Byers (5.00m/16-4 3/4 MR) will be competing at the National Pole Vault Summit.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 32nd season with the Cougar track program; 11th year as a head coach, 10th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Kris Grimes, Mark Macdonald, and Ellannee Richardson...volunteer coaches are Michael Friedberg, Matt McGee and Andrea Thornton.

COUGARS AND THE MPSF INDOOR HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for an indoor track conference title, joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...MPSF teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 include (men): 9. Oregon, 10. Arizona State, 13, Stanford, 17 Arizona, 19. UCLA and USC; (women): 5. UCLA and Stanford, 12. Arizona State, 18. Cal Poly, 21. California...at the 2004 MPSF Indoor Championships, Cougar women finished fourth while the men were seventh...sprinter Nicole Hatcher is the sole Cougar who will be back to defend an MPSF title, the 200m dash.

ABOUT THE COUGAR WOMEN: Returning veterans include Pacific-10 Conference outdoor scorers senior Rachel Bertholf and junior Jenna Dean (javelin), junior Tamara Diles (pole vault), sophomore Kaylee Gardner (triple jump), junior Robin Mikesh (high jump), sophomore Kayle Peterson (steeplechase), and redshirt sophomores Diana Pickler and Julie Pickler (heptathlon)...seventeen true freshmen, two transfers and five redshirt freshmen that bring some level of the unknown to Head Coach Rick Sloan...nine of the freshmen bring state champion titles: Sarah Burns (triple jump), Selena Galaviz (400m), Isley Gonzalez (cross country, 3200m), McKinnon Hanson (high jump), Collier Lawrence (cross country, 3200m, 1600m), Haley Paul (800m, 1600m), La Shawnda Porter (100m, 200m), Lisa Waananen (cross country, 3200m), and Jessica Zita (discus, shot put)...add to that mix a junior college transfer All-American heptathlete Katie Miller.

ABOUT THE COUGAR MEN: Decathlete Darion Powell (RS-junior), a 2003 All-American and Pac-10 runner-up who missed the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships last year with an injury, returns ready to compete along with returning Pac-10 outdoor scorers redshirt sophomore Tyson Byers (pole vault) and senior Jamil Smith (triple jump and long jump)...among the Cougar newcomers, prep state champions Kyle Eaton (high jump) and Phil Hinrichs (800m, 1600m) are joined by junior college transfers All-American Ryan Thomas (high jump, triple jump) and Robert Lee (800m)...D.J. Brown, a prep pole vault champion, returns to the WSU team after an injury and surgery last fall caused him to redshirt his freshman year.
