STANFORD, Calif. - One round. Eighteen holes.

That is all that stands in the way of the Washington State women's golf team in its quest to go to the national championships for the second consecutive year.

The Cougars head into Saturday's final round of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 6, 159 yard Stanford Golf Course in the coveted eighth position just ahead of a trio of Pacific-10 Conference rivals.

Why is eighth place so important? Because the top eight teams and two individuals from the regional advance to the national championships at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala., May 18-21.

After 36 holes, WSU is at 30-over 606, a shot ahead of Washington, two ahead of Oregon and three clear of Arizona State. In a tightly bunched field, all that separates fourth through 11th place heading into the final round is nine shots.

All-American Kim Welch and Anastasia Kostina lead the Cougars as the pair are among a group of five players tied for 12th at 2-over 146. Welch turned in a 3-over round of 75 Friday while Kostina shot 2-over 74. As a team, the Cougars tallied a score of 304 in the second round, just two shots more than their first round score.

Stephanie Parsley rebounded from an opening round 80 with a 4-over 76 to move to tie for 64th. Parsley was consistent throughout the second round, recording 15 pars on her scorecard.

Jay-Lee Longbottom and Maria Kostina both are tied for 78th at 15-over par.

Saturday's third and final round begins at 7:30 a.m. The Cougars are scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m., from the first tee.
