Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara scored six times in the seventh inning to rally past Washington State 7-5 in nonconference baseball, Monday.

"This one stings," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "The wheels fell off in the seventh inning. Offensively, we should have scored more in the first and we need to score in more than two innings in a game."

The Cougars (16-10) built a 5-0 lead with four runs in the first and one in the sixth in support of Chad Arnold. Travis Coulter and Shea Vucinich singled to open the game putting runners at the corners. Paul Gran doubled home Coulter and Jim Murphy doubled in two runs to put WSU on top 3-0. Jared Prince singled to send Murphy to third and Murphy scored when Greg Lagreid grounded into a double play.

In the sixth, Prince reached on a two-base error to open the frame and scored on a single by Lagreid to increase the Cougars' advantage to 5-0. Vucinich, Gran, Murphy and Lagreid each collected two hits in the game.

The Broncos (15-9) broke through in their half of the sixth on a RBI-single by Ryan Conan and loaded the bases with two outs ending Arnold's outing. The Cougar right-hander gave up one run on five hits and four walks while striking out one. Andrew Davis (2-2) pitched out of the jam retiring David Abraham on a ground out.

In the seventh, Conan delivered a run-scoring single and Gabe Alcantar collected a two-run single to cut the WSU lead to 5-4 and put runners at first and second with one out. Seth Harvey relieved Davis and gave up a run-scoring double to Geoff Klein that tied the game. One out later, Abraham doubled to score two runs and cap the comeback.

The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth when Vucinich walked and Gran and Murphy were each hit by a pitch. However, Prince flied out to end the game.

WSU returns home for a four-game series, April 4-6 against UC Davis. First pitch of the set is schedule for 5:30 p.m., Friday.
