What's Happening This Week: The Washington State men's golf team embarks on the Oregon Trail for the Duck Invitational at the par 72 6,802 yard Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore., March 22-23...the 54-hole tournament consists of 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday...action begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. both days.
The Field: The Cougars are part of a 13-team field...field consists of host Oregon, Cal State Northridge, Drake, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon State, Portland, San Diego, San Diego State, Stanford, Utah Valley State and Wyoming.
Last Year at the Duck: Led by an 11th place finish from current assistant coach Ryan Ressa, the Cougars finished seventh in the 16-team field of the 2003 Duck Invite...Ryan Camp posted a top 15 finish with a tie for 14th.
Chen Turns In Record-Setting Performance: Kevin Chen was as hot as the Texas weather as the freshman fired a school record 8-under 64 in the final round of the Sam Houston Classic in Huntsville Texas, March 15...Chen, whose 64 was the tournament's low score in the 93-person field, finished the 54-hole event at 4-under 212...he ended the tournament tied for fifth, marking a season-best finish for the Alamo, Calif., native...Chen's record-setting round included seven birdies and an eagle...he eclipsed the school's previous record score of 65, which was set on three occasions by three different players (Jeremy Champoux, Dustin White and Ryan Camp)...additionally, Chen's score bettered the Raven's Nest course record by one stroke.
Top 25 Madison: With a 19th place effort at Sam Houston, redshirt freshman Jordan Madison recorded his seventh top 25 finish in eight tournaments this season...five of those finishes have been in the top 10...Madison's best finish this season was a tie for fifth at the Husky Invitational, Sept. 30.
Young Guns: The Cougar freshmen trio of Jordan Madison, Kevin Chen, and Matt Fladwood are currently 12th in Golfstat's freshmen class impact rankings ...Madison is ninth in the Golfstat rankings in greens in regulation with a .756 percentage.
Head Cougars: Walt Williams is in his sixth year as head coach at WSU...in 2002, Williams was selected as Pac-10 Coach of the Year while leading his team to the NCAA West Regionals...Williams has helped four different golfers earn All Pac-10 honors and has had five different earn All Pac-10 Academic honors...assistant coach Heather Holte is in her third year at WSU...Holte played Pac-10 golf for the University of Oregon and graduated in 1997...she is now an amateur player at Oregon...Ryan Ressa has been added to the Cougar coaching staff as an assistant this year...Ressa played for WSU in the 2002-03 season.
