PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State junior defender Niki Ironside added to her impressive academic resume by being named the recipient of two prestigious awards this month.

In an April 12 ceremony coinciding with Mom's Weekend, Ironside was awarded the M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship by the Honors College. The Kentwood High School graduate was one of 29 recipients.

Ironside will also receive the first Distinguished Service Learning Award Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. at CUE 518. That honor stems from her work in WSU's Reading Buddy Program. The program was started four years ago by former Cougar basketball player Victoria Harrod at Jefferson Elementary in Pullman. Ironside helped expand the program to Sunnyside Elementary.

Ironside is a two-time member of the Pac-10's All-Academic first team.
