LEWISTON, Idaho - - Washington State pitchers walked seven batters and hit six more in a 17-5 loss to Lewis-Clark State Tuesday night at Harris Field.
Freshman Greg Goetz (0-1) threw 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits in the losing effort for WSU (3-14). Marc Kaiser (3-1) pitched five innings, surrendering three runs on six hits to receive the win for the Warriors (12-1). Rob Williams allowed two runs on four hits in four innings of work to notch his second save of the season.
The Cougars were led at the plate by Derek Bruce's 2-for-2 performance. Several LCSC players had multiple-hit games, led by Brenden Ryan's four.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Bruce, who reached on a single and advanced to third on two errors, came home on Brandon Reddinger's ground-out to second base. LCSC tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
The Warriors added four runs each in the third and fourth innings, sandwiched around the Cougars two runs in the top of the fourth.
LCSC put up seven runs in the fifth and one run in the eighth, taking a 17-3 lead. The Cougars added two more runs in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.
Jonathan Fender led-off the inning with a single and Jon Baeder followed with a double. After Zapper McGrath struck out, Bruce Jacobsen singled home Fender. Grant Richardson followed with a single to centerfield, plating Baeder. After Jay Miller reached on an error by Williams, WSU had the bases loaded. But Williams struck out Jamin Svendsen and got Chad Spellman to fly out to end the game.
Up next for the Cougars is a two-game non-conference series with Oregon State in Pasco, Wash. The first game of the series is slated for a 1 p.m. start Friday at Tri-City Stadium.
