DENTON, Tex. - Inclement weather cut short the first day of the Mean Green Classic, but the Washington State Men's golf team sits in a tie for seventh place. Two Cougars, Freshman Nick Ellis and Sophomore Kevin Tucker sit in a tie for 12th and lead the team heading into the final day of competition.
Freshman Nick Ellis, in his first collegiate competition, finished the day with an even-par 72. Sophomore Kevin Tucker also finished his first round posting an even-par 72. Sophomore Austin Hurt ended the first round tied for 31st and posted a two-over par 74. Senior Jordan Mason, tied for 41st, and Freshman Xavier Dailly, tied for 54th, round out the Cougar scores.
Sophomore Nick Grigsby and freshman Dustin Poe also traveled with the team but played as individuals. Grigsby sits tied for 22nd with a one-over par 73. Poe remains at 57th, finishing the day with a score of seven-over par, 79.
The Cougars total score of 11-over par, 293, heading into the final round of the tournament finds them only two strokes behind sixth place. Rounding out the top three teams is North Texas at 281, Western Kentucky at 282 and Texas State at 286.
"We will try and make a run at some of the leaders and move up tomorrow," said head coach Walt Williams. "We've got a talented young team and I'm looking forward to giving them some new experiences and new conditions. Hopefully they learned something today."
The final round of the Mean Green Classic begins Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m.
