PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Jayson Miller gave up two runs in seven and one-third innings on the mound to spark Washington State's 10-2 victory over Kent State in game two of a doubleheader, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The win earned the Cougars (8-2) a split after the Golden Flashes (3-6) took the opener 9-5.

"It was very important for us to bounce back with a win against a really, really good Kent State team," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Jayson Miller was great. He has a lot of maturity and gives you every chance to win each time he goes out there."

Miller (2-0) was locked in a pitchers' duel with Kent State's Kyle Hallock (0-1) until the Cougars broke a 0-0 tie and chased Hallock with a four-run sixth.

Alex Burg opened the inning with a single and scored when Paul Gran lauched a two-run home run to left-center field to put the Cougars up 2-0. One out later, Jim Murphy homered to center, his fourth-straight game with a dinger. After Greg Lagreid was hit by a pitch, Justin Gill relieved Hallock. Travis Coulter drew a walk, then Garry Kuykendall delivered a single to score LaGreid and increase the Cougars' lead to 4-0.

Miller took the four-run cushion into the eighth, but gave up a single and a walk sandwiched around a fly out to start the inning. Andrew Davis entered from the bullpen and gave up RBI-singles to Anthony Gallas and Brad Winter to cut the Cougars' lead to 4-2. Steve Kost came in and retired Conor Egan to end the threat.

WSU put the game away with six runs in the eighth. Murphy's two-run single capped the rally and he finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Kost worked a perfect ninth inning to record his first save of the season.

In the opener, Kent State touched up Cougar starter Chad Arnold (1-2) for six runs in two and one-third innings on the strength of three home runs. Ben Klafczynski hit a solo shot with two outs in the first, Gallas went deep leading off the second, and Jared Bartholomew gave the Golden Flashes a 4-0 lead with a two-run blast with two outs in the second.

The Cougars trailed 6-0 in the fourth when Gran doubled with one out and Murphy launched his third home run of the season to cut the deficit to 6-2.

After Kent State added a run in the fifth, WSU answered with three runs in its half of the frame. John Desmarais, Gran and Jared Prince all collected a RBI-single in the frame to pull the Cougars within 7-5.
