PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball team took a 3-2 win over the Oregon Ducks Thursday night for the Cougars' second Pac-10 win this season and first win since Oct. 1. The game scores at Bohler Gym were WSU 30-21, 28-30, 30-19, 36-38, 15-6.
WSU (9-20, 2-14 Pac-10) was led by freshmen Brittany Johnson and Jalen Pendon who combined for 41 of the Cougars' 74 kills in the two-hour and 15-minute match. Pendon, WSU's single-season digs record-holder, moved from her usual back row libero position to the front row as an outside hitter for this match and still led the team with 15 digs. Five Cougars had double-digit digs on the night. Freshman Stephanie Weishaar, playing libero tonight, had 11 digs and three service aces.
Senior Natalia Owens and junior Kelly Rosin chipped in another 22 kills as the Cougs hit a season-high .290 for the match. Jen Barcus added nine kills as she and Rosin did not have any hitting errors on the night with Barcus hitting .429 and Rosin hitting .556.
The Cougars also had a season-high 24 team blocks with 11 by Barcus, nine by Owens, eight from Johnson, and sophomore setter Maureen Perez had seven blocks and a career-best 63 assists.
Mira Djuric's 20 kills and four aces led Oregon (12-15, 1-14 Pac-10). Kelly Russell added 18 kills while Katie Swoboda had 20 digs and Kristen Bitter added six blocks. The Ducks hit .118 for the match and struggled in the fifth game with a -.182 hitting percentage.
Washington State hosts Oregon State (9-12, 5-10) Friday night in the home court finale for the 2005 season.
