AUBURN, Wash. - Rain and the standing water on greens that resulted from it forced the cancellation of the third round of the NCAA Fall Preview at the Washington National Golf Club, Wednesday.
Weather forced second round play to be postponed until 7:15 a.m., Wednesday. After the completion of the second round, the field was able to get through five holes of the third round before rain, along with the worsening course conditions, forced tournament officials to cancel remaining play.
Before the cancellation occurred, freshman Kim Welch (Sacramento, Calif.) was one-under par in her third round. Welch finished in a tie for 64th at 155 (+11).
Entering the third round the Cougars were five strokes back of the team immediately ahead of them, the University of Oregon. WSU had made up the deficit to catch and then overtake the Ducks before play was suspended.
Texas and Auburn tied for the team championship with a 36-hole total of 591. Arizona's Lorena Ochoa captured individual medalist honors with a five-under par score of 139.
The NCAA Fall Preview is annually contested at the site of the national collegiate championship and features one of the top fields in women's collegiate golf. The University of Washington will host the NCAA Championships May 21-24 at the par 72 Washington National Golf Club.
The Cougars return to action at the Oregon State hosted Northwest Classic, Oct 8-10 at Corvallis, Ore.
