CORVALLIS, Ore. -The Cougar men's golf team jumped two spots in the final round to finish in third place at the Northwest Collegiate Classic, which concluded Friday at Trysting Tree Golf Course, a par 72, 7,026 yard course.
"We had a pretty good day. I was pretty happy with the way the guys played," Head Coach Walt Williams said. "It was a little tougher out there today. The golf course was layed out as long as they could play it, but they stayed with it and played pretty well."
Senior Isaac Woods picked up where he left off Thursday, by firing another 71 (-1) in the third and final round of play. Woods finished the tournament in sixth place with a score of 211 (69-71-71, -5).
Teammate Jordan Madison, a redshirt freshman, finished right behind Woods in seventh place with a total of 212 (72-68-72, -4) in only his second career collegiate tournament. Madison shot an even par 72 in the third round and had a team low 68 (-4) for the tournament in the second round. This marks the second consecutive week that Madison has finished in the top 10, after finishing tied for ninth last week at the Mean Green Invitational.
The Cougar team finished with a score of 863 (-1). Only two other teams finished the tournament under par. After shooting a 286 (-2) in the first round and a 288 (E) in the second, the Cougars finished with a 289 (+1) in the final round. They were only two strokes behind Long Beach State for second place and finished ahead of both Oregon and Oregon State, the two other Pacific-10 Conference teams in the field.
Senior Ryan Camp finished tied for 33rd place after shooting a 75 (+3) in the third round leaving him with a score of 220 (71-74-75, +4). Freshman Kevin Chen finished his first collegiate tournament by shooting a 224 (+8) and finished tied for 50th. Sophomore Chad Carlson finished tied for 55th place, along with Oregon native, freshman Matt Fladwood. Fladwood finished the tournament by firing a 71 (-1) in the final round.
The Cougars will have little time to rest as they turn around and prepare in the Opus Northwest Husky Invitational that takes place Sept. 29-30 at Bremerton, Wash. at the par 72, 7,035 yard Gold Mountain Golf Complex. The tournament kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Monday. The first 36 holes will be played Monday, with the remaining 18 Tuesday. The 10-team field includes six Pac-10 schools, which are California, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington, and Washington State. The remaining teams consist of Brigham Young, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Tohoku Fukushi (Japan).
"This will be a good test for us. I'm excited to go up and play a quality golf course like Gold Mountain," Williams said. "It will be a test of skill and patience."
