Cougar Rowing Completes Action at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - The 19th ranked Washington State University women's rowing team finished its weekend of racing at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay, Sunday, as the second varsity eight placed first in the petite final of the Women's Collegiate Eight 2V event.

After qualifying for the grand final Saturday, the varsity four boat took sixth in the Women's Collegiate Four, the battle for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. The varsity eight and novice eight boats each placed second in their respective petite finals.

After finishing third in its preliminary heat Saturday, the second varsity eight (bow - Mickey Aylard, Erin Schuster, Alison Smith, Elise Jones, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) completed the 2,000 meter course with a time of 6:44.80, nearly seven seconds ahead of second-place Iowa.

Qualifying Saturday for the grand final of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, the varsity four (bow - Carter Marks, Megan McDonald, Samantha Hoeper, Gina Head, coxswain - Heidi Kim) finished sixth behind No. 6 USC, No. 9 UCLA, No. 7 Washington, and behind the A and B boats of No. 1 Virginia with a time of 7:35.10.

The varsity eight (bow - Nicole Hare, Ieva Adomaviciute, Katie Dick, Allie Reilly, Kendall Boliba, coxswain - Emily Boquet) placed second in its petite final, finishing behind Wisconsin and outpacing Texas, Iowa and Purdue with a time of 6:47.51.

The novice boat (bow, Alex Backsen, Sarah Steger, Mallory Yost, Chloe Rogers, Regina Snider, Jordan Watson, Katrina Tarrant, Savannah Davidson, coxswain - Cassandra Evans), which was the first boat to compete Sunday morning for the Cougars, finished ahead of USC en route to placing second with a time of 6:57.09.

Washington State women's rowing returns to action this coming Saturday, April 13 to take on Washington in a dual regatta at Wawawai Landing. Racing will begin at 9 a.m.
