PULLMAN, Wash. - Greg Lagreid had three hits to lead a 12-hit Cougar attack as Washington State University defeated Utah Valley State, 17-7, Thursday evening on the first day of the Banana Belt Tournament at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the win the Cougars capture their home-opener and improve to 4-3 on the season while the Wolverines fall to 2-7.
After allowing two unearned runs in the first, it was all Washington State the rest of the way. The Cougars scored a run in the second, two in the third and broke the game open with a four-run fourth. In that four-run inning, Wolverine starter Dan Christensen retired the first two batters before issuing four consecutive walks sandwiched around two wild pitches, producing two runs. Matt Ratliff came on in relief of Christensen and surrendered a two-run single to Matt Fanelli that scored Zach Borba and Jared Prince, pushing the lead to 7-2.
Utah Valley State cut the lead to two with a three-run fifth inning, courtesy of two Cougar errors and a balk. Dan Bulow's RBI single pushed across the first before Josh Hinckley's sacrifice fly one out later brought home Eli Slesk. Bulow then came across on a balk by Cougar reliever Steve Kost.
In the bottom of the fifth WSU scored six runs for a 13-5 advantage. Prince had a two-run single as did Jeff Miller. Two more runs came across on a pair of Wolverine errors as WSU sent 10 men to the plate in the inning. The Cougars added four more in the seventh as Cody Bartlett and Ryan Krauser had RBI singles and pinch-hitter Nick Hall delivered a two-run single in his only at-bat on the night.
Lagreid led the way at the plate as he had three hits, drove in two and scored two, while Prince, Hall and Miller each drove in two runs. On the mound Wayne Daman started and worked four innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Kost, the second of five Cougars pitchers, picked up the win in his two innings of work.
Utah Valley State sent six pitchers to the mound with Christensen suffering the loss. He allowed seven runs on four hits and walked six batters. In all the Wolverines walked 14 batters, hit four more and had three wild pitches.
At the plate Hinckley led the way with a pair of hits and three RBIs while Ryan Jones added two more hits.
The Cougars resume play in the Banana Belt Tournament with a Friday doubleheader. WSU first meets Southern Utah at 4 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. start against Air Force. Both games will be played at Bailey-Brayton Field.
