MOSCOW, Idaho - Washington State freshman April Cook connected on only one field goal Sunday against Idaho, but it was the biggest field goal of her life, leading the Cougars to a 53-50 victory over the Vandals at Cowan Spectrum. The Cougars improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Vandals fell to 3-6.
With 52 seconds remaining in the game, Idaho's Charlotte Otero hit a 3-pointer to give the Vandals a 50-48 lead. Just 19 seconds later, Cook nailed a 3-pointer of her own, putting the Cougars back in front 51-50. Senior guard Katie Appleton recorded her fourth steal of the game on Idaho's next possession, and freshman guard Jazmine Perkins added two free throws for the final margin.
"That was the first three I have ever shot to win a game," Cook said. "I knew I needed to get down, square up and make the shot."
The Cougars shot only 25.7 percent (18-of-70) from the field on the game, but forced 27 turnovers to keep it close. The two teams swapped leads 11 times.
"Sometimes when you win you win ugly," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "But it's still a win, and it's always nice to win on the road."
Perkins scored a game-high 14 points, her seventh double-digit scoring output in her first eight career games as a Cougar. Appleton also scored in double figures for the Cougars, adding 10 points. Senior center Ebonee Coates pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
WSU's road victory over the Vandals was the first in more than 13 years, ending a streak of four consecutive road losses. The last time the Cougars defeated Idaho away from Pullman was Dec. 12, 1995 (72-71).
The victory also marked the Cougars' third consecutive victory to start the month of December, the first time a WSU squad has accomplished the feat since the 1996-97 season.
Next up for the Cougars is a two-game match-up with Hawaii in the Aloha State. WSU will square off against the Rainbow Wahine Dec. 19 and Dec. 22.
