PULLMAN, Wash. -- The 2009 Washington State University women's cross country team is one of the best scholastic teams in NCAA Division I, the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Cougar women's cross country team's grade point average was 3.52, which tied for 33rd-best among the 97 women's teams honored. For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship Meet and have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.

"The student-athletes at Washington State University are strongly encouraged to combine athletics and academic success, and this team is a model of that," WSU Cross Country Coach Pete Julian said.

This is the fifth time the Cougar women's cross country team has earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic team honors since 1995.

Last week, senior Lisa Egami was one of 104 women student-athletes accorded USTFCCCA All-Academic status for the 2009 cross country season for their efforts in the classroom and on nation's cross country courses. Egami, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, has a 3.53 cumulative GPA and is a communication major.

Five Cougar women were selected for Pacific-10 Conference all-academic teams last fall. Chelsea VanDeBrake, a senior English major with a 3.95 grade point average, from Yakima, Wash., was named to the women's first team for the third consecutive year. Junior Ashlee Wall, from Walla Walla, Wash., was named to the first team for a second year in a row while maintaining a 4.00 GPA as a food science human nutrition, pre-med and pre-dental major. Marisa Sandoval, a senior from Los Alamos, NM, majoring in English with a 3.80 GPA, was named to the second team. Egami and sophomore Emily Farrar, undeclared with a 3.59 GPA, from Bainbridge, Wash., were named to the honorable mention list.
