PORTLAND - The Washington State volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Butler Saturday afternoon at the Portland Nike Invitational the Chiles Center. WSU, now 5-1, won with set scores of 25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 26-24, with Butler falling to 1-6 overall.
WSU's Meagan Ganzer led all players with 19 kills and hit .333. Rachel Todorovich and Jaicee Harris both contributed another 11 kills. Camryn Irwin has 43 assists and led the Cougarts with 16 digs. Ver'Leea Hardaway had three blocks.
Butler's Kelly Kyle had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Brooke Ruffolo led the match with 19 digs and Maureen Bamiro had a match-high nine blocks.
The Cougars fell behind in the first set 10-7 but scored 18 of the final 24 points to take the set. WSU dominated the second set and in the third set WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny used several players off the bench to give the starters a rest prior to the match against Texas A&M in the early evening. The Bulldogs took advantage of the inexperienced Cougars in the set and roared to a 24-21 lead. With most of the starters back in action, WSU could only close the gap a few points and Butler took the 25-23 win. In the fourth set Butler scored three consecutive points to tie the set at 23. The teams traded kills to knot the set again at 24. WSU went up 25-24 on Meagan Ganzer's kill was followed by an ace from Camryn Irwin.
