FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -The Washington State women's swimming team won four events in a co-ed dual meet versus the University of Washington on the eve of Apple Cup Friday.

The Cougars opened the meeting with a win in the 400-meter medley relay with a time of 4 minutes, 18.74 seconds. Kelley Miedema, Erin Eldridge, Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Lindsay Henahan (Rochester, N.Y.) captured the early victory for WSU.

Eldridge, a senior All-American from Kirkland, would later take a commanding lead in the 100 breaststroke finishing first with a 1:10.88. Rachelle Carano (Reno, Nev.) followed her with a 1:15.25 to finish one-two in the event to give the Cougars' 13 points on the board. One of the elite breaststrokers in the Pac-10, Eldridge also took home a win in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:34.32.

Miedema, a senior from Cape Town, South Africa, won a close race in the 100 backstroke. Down on the final stretch, Miedema battled Jessica Dyer head-to-head, but beat the Husky out by .02 tenths of second with a 1:05.13

"We had a handful of national rankings and a handful of times that would have placed in the top 16 at the FINA World Cup this week," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "I'm pretty happy. We swam well with 11-to-22 with half the number members they (Huskies) have. The stranglehold continues..."

The night's competition included the men's swimming programs from host UW and Brigham Young University. All events at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center were short-course meters.

The Cougars will dual the Huskies again at 10 a.m. in Husky Pool prior to the Apple Cup football game.

In preparation for Saturday morning's meet, Aceto reminds his student-athletes to not focus on the points but to stay focused on Pac-10s and NCAAs.
