YAKIMA, Wash. - The WSU Cougar baseball team rallied from a three-run defecit to tie Friday's baseball game in the seventh inning against the Oregon State Beavers, but OSU scored three more in the eighth to pull out a 6-3 win over Washington State at Parker Field. The Beavers improved their record to 10-8 while the Cougars dropped to 5-12.
Cougar starter Tony Banaszack got behind early as Oregon State center fielder Eric Stark lead off the game with a home run to right field the give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Banaszack pithced solid basball after the first hitter, as he did not allow OSU to score until the sixth inning. He lasted 7.1 innings and walked one batter but gave up 12 hits as Banazack's record fell to 1-4 on the season.
Down 3-0 in the sixth, the Cougs got on the scoreboard when Evan Hecker scored Brent Robertson with a sacrifice fly to right field cutting the Beavers' lead to two runs. In the seventh, WSU continued their comeback as Van Delos Santos reached on an error and Bookie Gates drove in Delos Santos two batters later to tie the game at three.
In the eighth, Oregon State broke the tie as Beaver third baseman drove in Josh Carter with a triple, and Andy Jarvis and Chris Biles drove in one run each to put the game out of hand. The Cougars' offense was shut down in their second comeback of the game as they could not record a hit in the final two innings
Oregon State starting pitcher Thad Johnson pitched a complete game as he kept the WSU's bats relatively quiet as he struck out five while giving up six hits. He did not allow a runner past first base until the sixth inning.
The next game for the Cougars is the second game of the weekend series against the Beavers Saturday at Parker Field starting at 2 p.m.
