Final Stats

TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State scored three runs in the ninth inning and Zach Fisher shut down the host Arizona Wildcats in the final inning to give the Cougars a 6-5 win over Arizona in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Friday night at Sancet Field.

Eddie Bonine (8-7) went the first eight innings for WSU (20-29 overall, 5-14 in Pac-10 play) to pick up the win, scattering 11 hits while striking out nine and walking just two. Fisher struck out one in the bottom of the ninth and gave up one single to record his third save of the year.

Arizona starter Sean Rierson (7-4) took the loss for the Wildcats (29-21, 7-12), with Wes Zlotoff finishing up the ninth. Rierson held WSU in check with seven hits until the ninth, then couldn't get a Cougar out.

Wes Falkenborg opened the final inning with a single and Derek Bruce followed in kind as WSU started to rally down 5-3. Steve Mortimer then sent Rierson to the dugout with a double to centerfield that brought both Cougar runners home, knotting the score at 5-5.

Tyson Boston followed with his third hit of the game and the Cougars' fourth consecutive hit of the ninth, with Mortimer moving to third. After Bruce Jacobsen struck out pinch hitting for Jon Baeder, Zlotoff uncorked a wild pitch to score Mortimer with what proved to be the winning run.

The Cougars scored in the second inning on Derek Bruce's eleventh home run of the season, then plated two more in the fourth inning to pull even with the Wildcats after Arizona scored single runs in each of the first three innings.

Both WSU runs in the fourth were unearned, with pinch runner Brent Robertson scoring on a groundout double play ball off the bat of Mortimer. Falkenborg then scored on Boston's single to left field.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the sixth with an unearned run off Bonine. Pat Reilly led off the inning with a single and scored on a throwing error by Bonine.

In the eighth Arizona took a 5-3 lead on Brad Hassey's sacrifice fly-out to center, scoring John Hardy.

The two teams resume their three-game series Saturday with another 7 p.m. contest, then conclude the series Sunday afternoon.
