PULLMAN, Wash. - Greg Lagreid lined a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh then came home on a passed ball with the winning run as the Gray squad edged the Crimson in Game Two of the annual Crimson and Gray World Series Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The win evened the series a one game each as the Crimson team earned a 6-1 victory on Monday.
With the score knotted at 2-2 in the seventh and final inning, Lagreid connected on his second hit of the afternoon. The next batter, Nick Cejka reached on an error, advancing Lagreid to third base. With two outs and a 0-1 count on Scott Suttmeier, Brian Rittereiser's passed ball allowed Lagreid to come home with the winning run.
The Gray team opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Suttmeir, who reach on an error, came home on an error by Rittereiser. The Crimson squad tied the score in the top of the third as Jay Miller hit a one-out single, then came home on Zach McAngus' RBI single.
In the fifth Mike Gilbert was hit by a Ross Humes pitch, stole second, then came around to score on a Lagreid RBI single. Crimson tied the score again in the sixth as McAngus led off with a single then scored on an outfield error.
For the game the Gray team was led by Lagreid's 2-for-3 day, while Jeff Miller added the only other hit, a one-out single in the first. On the mound Reese Baker worked the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out two. Jeremy Johnson went the final 2 2/3 innings, scattering two hits and one run, striking out three as he picked up the win.
Crimson was led by Travis Coulter's 3-for-4 day, including a double and two singles, while Miller and McAngus each added a pair of hits. Jayson Miller started and went the first four innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Humes pitched the fifth inning, allowing one run, with Jared Prince suffering the loss as he worked the final two frames, giving up an unearned run on one hit with three strikeouts.
Game Three of the Crimson and Gray World Series continues on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Bailey-Brayton Field.
