Browner is tied with five other players at 15th on the leader board. Senior Jenny Ballou (Portland, Ore.) is only one stroke behind her sophomore teammate, tied for 21st. Jennifer Dodd (Portland, Ore.) and Shanelle Roberts (Tacoma, Wash.) shot identical 78s and are tied for 27th. Washington State shot a first round 309, only six strokes off the school record they set at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate last fall.
The tournament is being played at the par-72 Laguna Seca Golf Course in Monterey, Calif. Host school San Jose State (299) is taking advantage of the home course and owns a one stroke lead over Tulsa (300). Fourth-ranked Arizona State (303) is four strokes behind in third with Tulane (304), Oklahoma State (306), and Vanderbilt (306) rounding out the top six.
Tulsa's Stacy Prammanasudh, Tulane's Meghan Bolger, and San Jose State's Helle Gram all shot even pars to end the round in a tie for first place. Oklahoma State's JoAnn Heller is one stroke back and the top-ranked women's player in the nation, Arizona State's Miriam Nagl leads a group of four golfers tied for fifth.
