LAS VEGAS - The WSU Cougar baseball team found the number seven to be very lucky in their 7-6 win over UNLV Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. In WSU's seventh game of the year, the team scored seven runs and coach Tim Mooney finally got a seven-inning performance from his starting pitcher.
Freshman Jamin Svendsen pitched 7.1 innings of solid baseball to record the longest outing by a WSU pitcher this season, with the previous best being four innings. Svendsen was on a tear early, allowing two hits but no runs through the first four innings.
The Cougar offense once found more success against UNLV starting pitching, as six runs were up on the scoreboard after three innings. In the second, designated hitter Scott Stockwell singled in Richard Hall to put WSU up 2-0, and one batter later center fielder Evan Hecker drove in Brandon Reddinger and Stockwell to increase the lead to four runs.
In the third inning, Stefan Bailie extended his hitting streak to 13 games, a streak dating back to 2000, with his first of two singles in the game. With one out in the inning, Brent Robertson drove in Bailie on a fielder's choice, and then executed the double-steal with Tyson Boston in the next at-bat with Boston crossing the plate to give the Cougars a commanding six run advantage.
UNLV scored two runs in their half of the fifth and one more in the sixth, but Svendsen retired the side in the seventh, temporarily ending the Rebels comeback attempt. A triple by UNLV designated hitter Trent Kitsch and a double by first baseman Joe Jacobitz in the eighth reduced the lead to 7-5. Donny Davis came on in relief to finish out the inning and held off one final Rebel rally in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
