Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Tyson Ross pitched seven innings of one-run ball to lead No. 12 California to a 9-1 victory over No. 25 Washington State in the Pacific-10 opener for both schools, Thursday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Ross (3-0) gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five as California improved to 14-3-1. Jared Prince (2-1) lasted four plus innings for the Cougars (13-6).

"Anytime you spot a lead to a guy like Ross, you are not going to be successful," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said.

California took a 1-0 in the second when Dylan Tonneson drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Blake Smith.

The Golden Bears added two in the third on a throwing error by WSU first baseman Jim Murphy and picked up one in the fifth when Rich Gorman led off with a home run.

The Cougars tallied their lone run in the bottom half of the fifth when Shea Vucinich walked with two outs and Travis Coulter followed with a triple to center field to make the score 5-1.

California answered with three runs in the sixth on a RBI-single by Charlie Cutler and a two-run single by Josh Satin.

The teams continue their three-game series Friday at 5:30 p.m.
