TULSA, Okla. - The Washington State baseball team got good starting pitching Friday night against Oral Roberts, but the Cougars could not produce enough offense as the Golden Eagles defeated WSU 4-1 in the first of a three game series at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Cougars dropped to 6-14 on the season while ORU improved to 13-3.
WSU starter Zach Fisher did his part to keep the game a pitchers' duel as he pitched six solid innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out four Golden Eagle batters. Oral Roberts starting pitcher Michael Rogers struck out 10 batters while giving up three walks, and he did not allow a Cougar to get past first base until the sixth inning.
WSU scored the first run of the game in the sixth when second baseman Bookie Gates drove in Mike Knight with two outs to break the scoreless tie. Oral Roberts answered WSU's run in the bottom of the sixth as leftfielder Matt Colin singled to score Trevor Leu to make it a 1-1 game.
Senior Donny Davis relieved Fisher to start the seventh, but David Castillo led off the inning for the Golden Eagles by hitting a double to right field and later scoring to give Oral Roberts a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Leu doubled-in two more runs to give ORU a 4-1 lead and secured the win for the Golden Eagles
