PULLMAN, Wash. -- The defending national champions and No. 4-ranked Stanford volleyball team took a 26-30, 30-22, 30-22, 30-25 win over Washington State Friday night before a Dad's Weekend crowd of 1,633 fans at Bohler Gym.

Kristin Richards tallied 31 kills and hit .467 for the Cardinal who are now 21-4 overall, 10-3 in Pac-10 play. Foluke Akinradewo and Nji Nnamani combined for another 30 kills as Katie Goldhahn had 68 assists. Courtney Schultz had 20 digs.

Four Cougars reached double-digit kills as Brittany Johnson led the way with 16, Natalia Owens and Jen Barcus each had 14 and Kelly Rosin chipped in 10. Jalen Pendon had 20 digs while Te'Ara Epps and Barcus each had a match-high five blocks as WSU out-blocked Stanford 11 to 4. Setters Maureen Perez and Gwen Davis combined for 44 assists.

WSU's .280 hitting percentage was best of the season for the Cougs. Only two teams have hit better than .300 against Stanford this season - No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Washington.

"The team came out very focused and really ready to compete and that's a new thing for us. We've been a slow-starting team," Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. "I was very proud and I think our team was of our first-game effort tonight and our first game and second game effort against Cal. We are still giving away points in big streaks and making too many errors - net violations, serve receives, that kind of thing - to win a match against a Cal or a Stanford. We are trying to focus on our side of the net and get better and eliminate our errors."

Washington State travels to Los Angeles to take on No. 21 UCLA and No. 16 USC Friday and Saturday.
