WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State guard Josh Akognon [Uh-KOY-un] has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 2-8, commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Akognon, a native of Petaluma, Calif., led the Cougars to a 78-71 win against then No. 10 Washington when he nailed a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to end an 11 game road skid against the Huskies. The sophomore tallied a career-high 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
The win over the Huskies was the first Cougar win against a top-10 opponent on the road in 57 games and snapped a 34-game losing streak overall against top-10 teams.
Akognon becomes the 13th Cougar to receive the honor and it is the 16th time Washington State has earned the award.. The last Cougar to receive the award was Thomas Kelati in December of last season.
