PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Derek Jones homered twice and redshirt-freshman David Stilley pitched four shutout innings in relief as Washington State defeated Gonzaga 8-4 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday.
The Cougars (3-5) trailed 2-0 when Jones homered leading off the fourth. Senior Jared Prince singled and moved to third when freshman Patrick Claussen dropped down a bunt single and Gonzaga (6-2) pitcher Steven Ames committed a throwing error. Claussen was thrown out trying to steal with sophomore Matt Argyropoulos at bat, but Prince came home on the play to tie the game 2-2.
In the sixth, Jones led off with his second home run of the game to put WSU on top 3-2. With one out, Claussen reached on a bunt single, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by Bulldogs' catcher Tyson Van Winkle.
In the eighth, Claussen walked with one out and scored on a RBI-double by Argyropoulos. Sophomore Ryan Peterson plated Argyropoulos with a triple and scored when senior Alex Burg reached on an error to make the score 8-2.
Stilley (1-0) was nearly automatic on the mound as he set down 12 of 13 hitters he faced, including six strikeouts to pick up his first-collegiate victory.
"It was team effort tonight," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "I am as happy with our team tonight as I have been all season. We got good pitching, hit the ball well, and played solid defense."
The Cougars travel to Houston for a tournament at Rice beginning with a game against the host Owls at 2:30 p.m. Pacific, Friday, March 6.
