SPOKANE, Wash. - - In the second competition of the fall season, the Cougar women's rowing team brought nothing but sunshine to a rainy Saturday by defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a dual regatta on the Spokane River.
The varsity women excelled in each of their races, posting the top two times of 17:29 and 18:04 in the varsity eight race and clocking a 19:17 and 20:12 to take the top two spots in the varsity four event. WSU also posted a time of 19:52 in a varsity pair race that went unopposed.
"We felt like we had a real strong race," head coach Tammy Crawford said of the varsity squad. "They were powerful without a lot of flat spots. When they needed to make adjustments they responded to the coxswains well."
The novice rowers took five out of the top six spots in their race, including the top four with winning times of 19:25, 20:08, 20:15, and 20:19.
The final race of the fall season takes place Sunday, November 12th, at Montlake Cut in Seattle. The Head of the Lake regatta will include Washington, Stanford, Oregon State, California and San Diego State.
