Cougars Stay Strong In Second Day Of Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Washington State junior Erin McCleave continued her success in the second day of the Minnesota Invitational Saturday, swimming to a first place finish and school record in the 200 freestyle. Cougar 800 freestyle relay team also earns WSU record.

McCleave posted a time of 1:48.48, beating her own record of 1:49.41set in 2004. McCleave earned a WSU and meet in the 500 freestyle (4:43.82) in the first day of competition besting the Minnesota Invitational meet record (4:45.99) held by 2004 Olympian Carly Piper. McCleave's 500 freestyle time currently ranks as the third fastest in the country.

The Washington State relay team of Kayli Changstrom, Jane Copland, Lina Daugvilaite and McCleave posted a 800 freestyle relay time of 7:26.94 to earn the WSU record in the event. The previous record of 7:27.57 was set in 2001.

Freshman Afton Pickett swam to a third place finish in the 100 backstroke final with a time of 56.93. Pickett posted a preliminary time of 56.67 earning the second spot on the Cougars' all-time Top-10 list.

Three Cougars made appearances in the 100 breaststroke final with Monika Povilonyte swimming to a fifth place finish (1:03. 92), freshman Elyse Peterson earning sixth (1:04.74) and Copland grabbing seventh (1:05.20).

Competition at the Minnesota Invitational wraps up Sunday, Nov. 20 with preliminaries at 8 a.m. PST and finals at 1 p.m. PST.
