CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jayson Miller allowed only one run through eight innings and Travis Coulter collected three hits as Washington State defeated No. 15 Oregon State in the deciding game of a Pacific-10 Conference series Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
With the win the Cougars (25-22, 8-13) take two of three against the defending national champion and earn their first series win over Oregon State (36-13, 8-10) since the 2003 season. WSU also wins its second consecutive conference series and third in last four outings.
Miller was masterful throughout the game, holding the Beavers to one run on four hits through eight innings. He fanned five before giving way to Ross Humes to start the ninth. Humes surrendered two runs on a Mike Lissman home run, but with runners at first and second and one out, induced Lonnie Lechelt to hit into the game-ending double play.
For the third straight game the Cougars jumped to an early lead as Travis Coulter led off with a triple then scored on Scott Suttmeier's sacrifice fly to right, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Catcher Mike Gilbert, getting his first start behind the plate since Mar. 25, made it 2-0 WSU as he drilled a one-out home run to right in the second, his second home run of the season.
Oregon State found the scoreboard in the second as Jason Ogata led off with a double and scored on a single by Braden Wells.
The Cougars extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth as Coulter doubled to right then came home on an infield single by Suttmeier. In the sixth WSU put up two more runs as Paul Gran led off with a home run to left, his fifth of the season. Jeff Miller followed with a double to right-center and later scored on Gilbert's RBI single to center. That ended the day for Beaver starter Jorge Reyes, who went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.
The Beavers threatened in the sixth with runners at the corners, but Jayson Miller got Lissman to flyout to right, keeping the Cougar lead at 5-1 heading into the final three innings.
Coulter led the way offensively with three hits while Gilbert had two hits and two RBIs, and Gran remained one of the hottest hitters on the team with two more hits. Over his last 15 games the junior third baseman is hitting .460 (29-63), leading WSU to a 9-6 mark in that stretch.
Oregon State was led by Wells' three hits, while Ogata had a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
The Cougars continue their Oregon road swing Monday when they face Portland in a nonconference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
