SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington State scored five runs in the ninth inning, but fell one run short in a 10-9 loss to Washington Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Cougars (14-19 overall, 2-6 in the Pac-10) pounded out 16 hits and played errorless in the field, but it was not enough. Washington (14-17-1, 2-3) scored eight runs in the first three innings and two more in the sixth before fending off the WSU charge.
Garrett Alwert (2-3) received the loss for the Cougars. He went 2 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Freshman Bryce Chamberlin followed with 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs for WSU. Sean White (3-2) recorded the win for the Huskies.
At the plate, however, the Cougars were explosive. Justin Hart was 3-for-6 at the plate with a career-high five RBI. Bookie Gates was 4-of-5 and scored two runs. Evan Hecker, Jon Baeder and Collin Henderson each collected two hits and scored twice.
WSU got on the board first. In the top of the second inning, Hart singled to left field with bases loaded, scoring Baeder and Gates to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Washington answered with three runs in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the third to take an 8-2 lead.
The Cougars refused to go away, tallying two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Husky lead to 8-4. Hart, again, had the hot bat, plating Henderson from third base on an infield single. Two batters later, Hecker scored on a fielder's choice.
The Huskies countered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to build a 10-4 lead. After each team went scoreless in the seventh and eighth, WSU responded with a furious rally in the top half of the ninth.
With two men on and no outs, Robert Stahlke singled to bring home Gates. Henderson followed with a single to third base, scoring Baeder on an error by pitcher Tyler Shepple. Hart came up huge once more, singling to center field to bring home Henderson and Stahlke. Hecker also scored on the play on a throwing error by Husky first baseman Bryan Johnson.
Afterward, Steve Mortimer grounded out, while moving Hart to third. LaRue then reached on a fielder's choice, but Hart was thrown out at home. Shepple then ended the threat when he got Tyson Boston to strikeout swinging.
WSU and Washington will face-off for the last time this season Sunday at 1 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
