RENO, Nev. - The WSU baseball team could not sustain any offensive threats as solid Nevada pitching defeated the Cougars 6-1 Friday afternoon at Peccole Park in the series opener. The Cougars' record fell to 3-7 while the Wolf Pack improved to 4-9.

After walking WSU centerfielder Evan Hecker to open the game, Nevada pitcher Jason Mackintosh kept the Cougar bats silent as he surrendered three hits in the game. WSU did not get a runner past first base until junior Brent Robertson hit his third double of the season in the fifth inning. Mackintosh pitched 7.2 innings and struck out five to earn his second win of the year.

Nevada's offense took advantage of Cougar pitcher Tyson Thompson's control problems as hitters were able to reach base seven times without having to put the ball in play.

Up 2-0 nothing after a bases loaded walk in the fourth inning, Wolf Pack second baseman Ryan Strain cleared the bases with a three-run double down the leftfield line to increase the margin to five runs. Strain later scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 6-0 but WSU reliever Zach Fisher kept Nevada off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

The Cougs tried to get a two-out rally started in the eighth inning when first baseman Stefan Bailie drove in the game's only run with a bases loaded walk, scoring Hecker, but WSU freshman Tanner Kahler flied out to center to end the threat.

The next game in the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. PST.
