CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington State sophomore Allison Scurich earned Defensive MVP honors at the OSU Nike Invitational Tournament Sunday as the Cougars finished tournament play 2-0. Alix Rustrum, Carmen Anderson and Ashley Lara were named to all-tournament team.
"To have Allison named as Defensive MVP with the talent present in the tournament is a credit to her and her teammates," Washington State Head Coach Matt Potter said. "I am also pleased Carmen, Alix and Ashley were recognized and pleased with the improvements we are showing signs of as a team. Having a combination of defenders, midfielders and forwards named to the all-tournament team serves as recognition if the all around team effort that went into getting these results."
Scurich and Lara led a Cougar defense that shut out both Virginia Commonwealth and Long Island in tournament play and held its opponents to a combined 11 shots. Scurich also provided an assist on Rustrum's game winning goal against LIU.
Rustrum led the Cougar offense with eight shots in the two contests with Anderson adding four as Washington State out shot its opponents 25-to-11. Rustrum found the back of the net against Long Island recording her first tally of the season.
"To go on the road and get two wins is always a good weekend," Potter said. "Thanks goes to Oregon State for hosting the tournament and especially to Steve Fennah and his staff for looking out for us after a hiccup with our transportation."
Washington State finished second overall in tournament play behind host Oregon State. Both teams recorded two victories with the Beavers edging out the Cougars in goals scored to take the title.
