LOS ANGELES - The Washington State University volleyball team played a very competitive match but lost to 17th-ranked USC 15-5, 17-15, 15-11 Saturday night at North Gym.
WSU is 11-10 overall, 5-8 in conference play while USC moves to 15-5 overall, 10-3 in Pac-10 Conference standings.
USC's Janae Henry led the match with 18 kills while Jennifer Pahl had 14 kills. The Cougars were led by senior Joy Sperry's 14 kills and 11 digs.
The first game began very competitively, with numerous rallies before being knotted at five before USC scored 10 straight including seven consecutive points without a Cougar sideout. WSU hit .094 to USC's .400.
Game two was a battle royal with the score tied at six, WSU went on a 6-0 run and gave up only two points before serving for the game at 14-8. A kill by Pahl stopped the Cougs but LaToya Harris got the sideout only to have Kortney Jamtaas commit a service error. USC started it's own 6-0 run with a controversial non-call as their setter, Heidi Munneke, reached over the net to block a set by Wright. WSU had a third attempt at game halted by an Antoinette Polk kill and the Women of Troy tied it at 14 with a kill from Henry. The teams traded sideouts but Henry tallied the 15th point and was stopped with a Sperry kill. Cougars tied it when Pahl's kill went wide but proceeded no further. Johnson hit into the net for the Trojan's 16th point. At USC's second try at game point, Sperry slammed one down. Henry returned the kill and the home-team crimson won the game 17-15 on Henry's effort at the net. In this game, WSU out-hit USC .265 to .230, and out-blocked the decidedly taller Trojans seven to three.
Once again, the Cougars played a highly competitive game, tying it up at five and staying within one at 9-10. USC made another run with a four unanswered points but needed three attempts at game point and gave up two points to the Cougs before claiming in the game at 15-11.
WSU plays it final home contests Friday against Arizona State and Saturday against Arizona.
