PASCO, Wash. - WSU junior Justin Cayetano pitched a complete game against Gonzaga to earn his first win in a Cougar uniform as the WSU baseball team defeated the Bulldogs 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Columbia Basin CC. The game was played in the Tri-Cities as a make-up for a series cancelled earlier this month.
Cayetano's first nine-inning effort of the season was a solid one as he struck out five with no walks and kept the Bulldogs scoreless through the first eight innings. Gonzaga's only run was scored in the ninth inning while the WSU defense turned a double play to shut down a potential Bulldog rally.
The Cougars started the scoring in the third inning when first baseman Stefan Bailie singled in senior Mike Knight and newcomer Adrian Thomas doubled down the right field line scoring Bookie Gates to give WSU a 2-0 lead and all the runs needed for the win.
In the sixth, Gates drove in shortstop Richard Hall to stretch the lead to three runs, and Thomas singled to left field to send two more Cougars across the plate to give WSU a 5-0 lead. Bailie gave the Cougs a commanding six run lead in the seventh when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring catcher Jon Baeder.
The two schools play each other again this weekend at Walla Walla CC with the first of four games scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. PST.
