PULLMAN, Wash. - Matt Argyropoulos and Derek Jones each homered to lead Washington State past Washington 5-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The power surge gave Adam Conley (5-5) the victory after the southpaw gave up two runs and struck out six in seven and two-thirds innings.

"Adam Conley did not have his best stuff, but gave us a great effort tonight," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Offensively, we got a couple of big swings from Jones and Argyropoulos."

The Cougars (18-19, 4-12 Pac-10) went on top 2-0 in the second on a double by Taylor Ard in front of a bomb over the right-center field wall off the bat of Argyropoulos. The Huskies (12-26, 3-10 Pac-10) picked up a run in the third on a walk, a hit by pitch and a single.

Jones led off the fourth with a home run down the right field line against Geoff Brown (1-5). It was the 31st home run of the junior's career, eighth all-time at Washington State.

In the fifth, Jay Ponciano led off with a double and Adam Nelubowich walked. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Johnson and Cody Bartlett was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brett Jacobs made the Huskies pay with a two-run single that increased the Cougars' advantage to 5-1.

Washington added a run in the seventh on three hits. Conley received helped from his defense as the Cougars chalked up a double play in each of the first-four innings. In the eighth, it was J.D. Leckenby who picked up Conley by recording the final out of the inning with a man aboard.

Paris Shewey worked the ninth for his eighth save, best in the Pac-10. The left-hander moved into a tie for fifth on the Cougar single-season list and his 11-career saves are tied for third all-time at Washington State.

The series continues Saturday at noon.
