PULLMAN, Wash. - Paul Gran collected three hits, including a home run, and Jayson Miller pitched seven strong innings as Washington State defeated second-ranked Arizona State 10-4 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The game was played in front of 3,313, the largest crowd at Bailey-Brayton Field since 1999 and the third largest since 1987.

Miller (5-1) gave up four runs in seven innings and struck out four. The senior has gone at least six innings in each of his eight starts this season.

"Obviously, I am happy for our team, but I am really happy for Jayson," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "He won this game by pitching like a senior needs to pitch."

Gran's home run, his sixth of the season, came with a man on in the eighth to cap the day's scoring. Gran finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

"That was a big hit because at 8-4, it is still a game against a team like Arizona State," Marbut said. "It is probably still a game at 10-4, but to add on a little bit was nice because we have not done that lately."

Trailing 1-0, the Cougars (19-14, 3-5 Pac-10) scored four times in the bottom of the third. The first run scored on a passed ball, and then Jim Murphy doubled in two runs putting the Cougars on top 3-1. Murphy finished with three RBI to raise his team-leading total to 41. Simi Reynolds capped the rally with a run-scoring single to stretch the WSU lead to 4-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Sun Devils (29-4, 5-3 Pac-10) drew even with a three-run fifth. With runners at first and second, Brett Wallace lifted a fly ball to left-centerfield for what appeared to be the first out of the inning. However, Cougar centerfielder Garry Kuykendall misjudged the ball and it fell for a double allowing a run to score. Jason Kipnis drove in a run with a ground out and Petey Paramore tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars broke the 4-4 tie with a four-run seventh. With one out, Scott Suttmeier and Gran singled to put runners at first and second base. Murphy followed with a single up the middle to score Suttmeier and ASU centerfielder committed two errors on the play allowing Gran to score as Murphy took second. After Jared Prince walked, Sun Devil reliever Reyes Dorado gave up run-scoring singles to Reynolds and Greg Lagreid to put WSU on top 8-4.

The teams conclude their three-game series at noon, Sunday.
