PULLMAN, Wash. - Adam Conley pitched eight innings of two-run ball and No. 24 Washington State completed a three-game sweep with an 8-2 victory over USC in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Sunday.
The Cougars (31-18, 14-10 Pac-10) won for the eighth time in their last nine Pac-10 games, and captured their ninth victory in the last 10 games overall. The Trojans (25-31, 5-19 Pac-10) lost for a school-record 19th time since the Pac-10 reunified in 1999.
"It was fitting for our seniors in their final Pac-10 game at home to play a part in this win," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Matt Fanelli had a big day at the plate and Michael Weber got a clutch hit late. The story of our last few weeks has been solid pitching and Adam Conley gave us that again today."
Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by Garry Kuykendall and a two-out RBI-double by Fanelli, one of three hits by the Cougars' designated hitter. USC tied the game in the third, but WSU regained the lead in the sixth on the Derek Jones's 11th home run of the season. The blast came off Trojans' starter and loser Kevin Couture (2-4), gave WSU the lead for good, and made a winner out of Conley (5-2). The Cougar southpaw gave up seven hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter while lowering his team-leading earned run average to 2.57.
Garry Kuykendall increased the Cougars' lead to 3-1 in the seventh with a two-out solo home run, his first long ball of the season. After USC picked up a run in the eighth, WSU put the game way with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Shea Vucinich led off with a walk and Kyle Johnson sacrificed him to second. Matt Argyropoulos doubled to scored Vucinich and give the Cougars a 4-2 lead. Jay Ponciano singled and Kuykendall walked to load the bases. Cody Bartlett drove home a run with a fielder's choice and Weber sent a rocket into the left-center field gap for a two-run double. A botched rundown by the Trojans allowed Weber to score and put the WSU on top 8-2.
The Cougars travel to Spokane, Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game against Gonzaga.
