EUGENE, Ore. - Kim Welch defended her title in impressive fashion as the Washington State women's golf team dominated the field and captured its third consecutive victory of the spring at the Duck Invitational Tuesday.
Welch torched the Par-72, 5,953 yard Shadow Hills Golf Course for a three round total of 209 tying Tasha Browner's record mark set Sept. 11-12, 2000 at Ptarmigan C.C., at Fort Collins, Colo. Welch, a native of Sacramento, Calif, started out with an opening round score of 70 before blistering the greens for a course record 4-under 68 in the second round. Welch won the individual crown by 14 strokes and successfully repeated her individual title from last year becoming the first female golfer in WSU history to accomplish that feat.
The Cougars as a team destroyed the 12-team field and captured their third consecutive victory of the spring by 18 stokes over second place San Diego State. The victory makes it the first time in WSU women's golf history that a team has won three straight tournaments. In addition, WSU set two school records. The first round score of 295 broke the old scoring mark of 296 at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford, Calif., May 11, 2002, and the final score of 896 replaces the 898 at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, Sept. 10-11, 2001.
The rest of the Cougar team stepped up their game as two more golfers finished in the Top 10. Maria Kostina continued her three tournament streak of Top 3 finishes, placing third at 10-over (75-77-74, 226), followed by Jay-Lee Longbottom at a tie for sixth (76-75-77, +12), Katharine Dorris at a tie for 18th (74-79-80, +17), and Stephanie Parsley tying for 29th (79-79-80, +22). Competing as an individual, Ashleigh Gilhuly finished in a tie for 36th (78-78-84, +24) to round out the Cougar contingent.
WSU looks to extend their tournament winning streak to four Mar. 24-25 at the Bruin Classic at Santa Clarita, Calif.
