LAYTON, Utah - The Washington State University men's golf team takes a convincing lead after day one at the Purple and Red Invitational.

The Cougars posted a team score of 559, eight strokes ahead of the pack, at the Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah. WSU finished the day ahead of the remaining 15 teams; Portland, Sacramento State, Weber State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Air Force, Utah State, Arkansas-Little Rock, British Columbia, Utah Valley, UC Riverside and Southern Utah.

Leading the Cougars is redshirt freshman Kyle Hurt, who finished day one tied for second and carded a 138 (-6).

Three other Cougars enter the final day in the top 15. Sophomore Hank Frame is tied for fifth shooting a 139 (-5), freshman Kent Hagen is tied for ninth shooting a140 (-4) and junior Trent Sanders finishes the day tied for 15th carding a 142 (-2).

"We played very well today considering our senior leader Nick Ellis was at home with a sprained ankle," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. "We have four players in the top 25 and have a nice lead going into day two, but we still have work to do tomorrow."

Also of note, junior Paul Mitzel ends the day tied for 54th shooting a 150 (+6).

The Cougars look to hold their first place finish when the final round starts tomorrow at 8:10 a.m.
