MORAGA, Calif. - The Washington State women's basketball team fell to St. Mary's College, 73-69, in the 2010-11 season opener for both teams, Friday at McKeon Pavilion.
The teams engaged in a back and forth affair throughout the game with 12 ties and 13 lead changes. Down 72-69 with 20 seconds left, the Cougars had a chance to send it to a 13th tie but Jazmine Perkins three-point attempt rimmed out with eight seconds remaining. St. Mary's Louella Tomlinson made a free throw to provide the final scoring margin.
The Cougars led by as much as 11 in the first half and held a 40-38 lead at the break. After exchanging the lead for the better part of the second half, the Gaels opened a 64-58 advantage with 5:38 remaining. However, the Cougars fought back to tie the game at 67 with 3:39 left.
That proved to be the final tie of the game as the Gaels scored five straight points to take a 72-67 lead with 2:04 left. Perkins hit a jumper with 1:12 left to cut the deficit to three but the Cougars could get no closer the rest of the way.
WSU returns to action Sunday at UC Davis. Tip is at 1 p.m.
