PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's swim team will compete in the Snake River Challenge Monday, Sept. 6 beginning at 11 a.m.

The annual Labor Day event consists of a 2.2 mile swim from Granite Point to the WSU Boathouse followed by a 2.2 mile run back to Granite Point. Swimmers will compete against one another for the fastest swim, run and overall time.

The Snake River Challenge is a time honored tradition for the Cougar swim team and both Washington State alumni and fans are encouraged to attend.

"I believe that this is a great event because of the tradition behind it," said head coach Erica Quam. "There is a lot of pride that Washington State swimmers have in themselves after they complete each challenge. There is always a sense of accomplishment crossing the finish line, with the whole team cheering one another on until everyone is done."

Senior Talor Whitaker was first to complete the swim last year and make the transition onto dry land. During the run she was passed by the eventual winner, fellow senior Jennifer Dean who crossed the finish line in a time of 71 minutes, 8 seconds. Shawna Keller finished second at 72:35, while sophomore Shelbi Luchini rounded out the top three, finishing in 73:10.

"To win this event, you have to have a combination of endurance in the water and the toughness to get your legs back underneath you for the run," Quam said. The swimmers who committed to elevating their level of fitness during the summer and ran more consistently, tend to be towards the front of the pack."
