What's Happening This Week: The Washington State University women's golf team travels to The Woodlands Golf Course at Sunriver, Ore., to open its 2003-04 season at The Northwest Invite Sept. 15-16... the tournament begins with a shotgun start on Monday morning with 36 holes of play and will end Tuesday with the final round of 18.
The Woodlands: The Woodlands Golf Course, in Sunriver, Ore., is one of three featured course at the Sunriver Resort Golf Course...the course opened in the spring of 1999 and is scheduled to host the NCAA Championships in 2005...the course will carry a par 72 and will play to 6,100 yards in the event.
The Field: The Northwest Invitational field will consist of 15 teams: Long Beach State, Portland State, UNLV, UC-Irvine, UC-Riverside, San Jose, San Francisco, Eastern Washington, Boise State, Idaho, TCU, Weber State, Portland, Oregon State, and Washington State.
Head Coach Walt Williams on The Northwest Invitational: "It's a great course and has a very strong field. It's going to be a very good tournament to start out with in order to see where we stand."
Welch Earns Pre-Season Accolades: Junior Kim Welch was ranked ninth on the top 50 female players to watch list by Golf World magazine in its Sept. 12 issue...Welch was also named a Preseason All-American by Golf Week magazine...Welch returns from a season where she had nine Top 10 finishes, including fifth place at the NCAA Championship and second place at the NCAA West Regional...Welch's Golf World honor is not her first from the publication...she has been named College Player of the Week in each of the past two seasons.
Aces In The Hole: Along with Welch, the Cougars welcome back the four players from the NCAA Championship qualifying team... Maria Kostina was named an All-Pac-10 Conference selection with three top 10 finishes...Maria is now joined by her younger sister, Anastasia, who transferred this past fall...last season, Jay-Lee Longbottom competed in 14 tournaments, placing third once, and had three top 10 finishes...Stephanie Parsley and Ashley Gilhuly also return form the NCAA Championship team... Lindsey Bogden, and Heather O'Leary complete the roster.
