LONG BEACH, Calif. - Washington State's women's cross country team finished seventh of nine teams, while the men finished eighth in an eight-team field, at the Pacific-10 Cross Country Championships at El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach, Calif. Saturday.

Junior Alishia Booterbaugh led the Cougars with a 35th-place finish (18:50.5), followed directly by Ryan Gilmore in 36th place (18:51.8). WSU's regular leader, 1998 All-American Megan Maynard, finished third for the Cougars in 42nd place. WSU's 205 total team points were just better than California's and Southern California's 228 team points, the latter two teams tying for eighth place.

Stanford won the women's team competition with 32 points. The Cardinal swept the top three individual spots, with Erin Sullivan taking medalist honors in 17:01.5 over the 5,000 meter course.

The Cougar men placed only four runners, Mark Wicklander not finishing the race, to finish last of eight teams with 199 points. UCLA finished slightly ahead of WSU with 193 points. Arizona captured team honors with 36 points. Steve Fein, of third-place Oregon, captured individual honors in 23:37.0 in the 8,000 meter race.

Freshman Jonathan Welsh was WSU's top runner, finishing 29th in 25:31.7. Sophomore Scott Johnson's time of 25:34.1 was good enough for 31st.
