RENO, Nev. - The WSU Cougar baseball team found few solutions against dominate Nevada pitching in a 6-4 loss to the Wolf Pack at Peccole Park Sunday afternoon. The loss puts the Cougars' record at 3-8, while Nevada improved to 5-9.
Wolf Pack pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts as every WSU hitter went down on strikes at least once except for shortstop Aaron Smith, who recorded a single to center field in his only at bat in the game. Nevada starting pitcher Darrell Rasner registered 12 strikeouts in seven innings' work to earn his first win of the season.
"(Rasner) just beat us with fastballs," said WSU head coach Tim Mooney. "He located his fastball the entire game, and we just weren't able hit it."
The Wolf Pack jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, and in the third, Nevada first baseman JaRell McIntyre increased the lead to four with a two-run home run off Cougar starter Tony Banaszak. In the fourth inning, Clay Belding drove in Nevada's fifth run with a triple off WSU reliever Jamin Svendsen, and later scored thanks to a Ryan Maguire single to make the score 6-0.
"It's the same old story for us. Our starting pitching can't get the job done. The relief is good, but we need somebody to get up and give us a good start," Mooney said.
Justin Williams gave WSU a chance at a comeback with a solo home run in the fifth inning and a two-run blast in the seventh off Rasner to cut the deficit to three runs. Stefan Bailie continued the Cougar rally in the eighth inning with his sixth homer of the year to finalize the scoring at 6-4.
The next game for the Cougars is Tuesday in Pasco, Wash., at 1 p.m. PST against the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
