WSU HOSTS INVITATIONAL MEET: Washington State's men's and women's track and field teams are home for their last meet of the season, the Cougar Invitational...athletes from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Spokane CC and North Idaho College will see action in this non-scoring meet...the women's pole vault, long jump and javelin events open the action at 11 a.m. with the men's steeplechase, set to start at 1:30 p.m...since this is a non-scoring meet, athletes will be concentrating on improving marks in their specialties in preparation for conference championships coming up in the next two weeks.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 25th season with the Cougar track program (fourth year as a head coach, third year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was selected the District 8 Indoor Coach of the Year...he was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Men's Coach of the Year and Women's Coach of the Year...he is joined by associate coach Lissa Olson, assistant coaches Dr. Li Li, Debra Lombardi, Mark Macdonald, and Rohan Walker...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Jason Wiens, Robyn Bryson and Dan O'Brien.

NOTEWORTHY: Senior triple jumper Hilary Mawindi is going through graduation ceremonies at WSU Saturday and will miss the Cougar Invitational meet...Mawindi's mother, Victoria, will be in Pullman to see her son receive his diploma in business/real estate, having traveled from Zimbabwe...All-American decathlete Leo Slack (Kennewick) will also receive his diploma May 9 (psychology) and will not return to compete for WSU this season...Slack, the 1996 Pac-10 decathlon champion, gives up his final year of eligibility at WSU for marriage and a job in the Tri-Cities...with spring classes over at WSU, the Cougar track teams will leave campus May 14 and spend the next 12 days in Stanford, Calif., competing in the Cardinal Qualifier May 16 and preparing for the Pac-10 Championships at the same location May 23-24.

The Cougar men defeated Kansas 86-73 and Boise State 113-49 while the WSU women scored 120 to the Jayhawks' 33 and 126 to the Broncos' 27. Kansas swept Boise State 81-61 on the women's side and 83-75 for the men. The WSU women swept the hammer with junior Molly Moore reclaiming the school's women's hammer record with an NCAA PQ toss of 172-3. Moore replaced freshman Andrea Thornton's mark of 171-7. Thornton finished third at 162-10 while Kristin Ogle was second with a lifetime-best 165-2. Moore also finished second in the shot put and fourth in the javelin. KU's Candy Mason won the women's pole vault and set a Mooberry Track record by clearing 11-6 1/4. WSU's Tauni Bainbridge upped her school record height to 10-2. Cougar freshman Cicely Clinkenbeard tied the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 41-3 3/4 (Sharon Li, 1992). Clinkenbeard led a Cougar sweep in the event with Kirsten Koch second with a lifetime-best 40-10 1/2, and Cathy McNeely third at 38-2 1/4. Francesca Green won the women's long jump at 20-2 1/2 followed by WSU's Agneta Rosenblad at 19-9 3/4. Green also claimed the high jump with a season-best leap of 5-8 3/4, won the 100m dash (11.85), and ran the lead leg of the winning 4x100m relay team. Eric Kamau won the 1500m race and then ran as a "rabbit" to pace teammate Bernard Lagat to an NCAA AQ 800m win with a time of 1:47.26.
