PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University cross country teams have a schedule that features five meets in the Northwest and Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake is happy about limited travel.
"It's a fun schedule this year especially with the Pac-10 championships in Corvallis and the NCAA Regional championships in Eugene," Drake said. "I'm excited to stay in the Northwest. Sometimes going down to the Arizona is hard for us to be running in the heat that time of year, so to stay up here is good for us and easy trips. Also, it is nice for our athletes since most are from the Northwest and they enjoy competing locally a little bit more."
The Cougars will also be returning to Minnesota for the 22nd Annual Roy Griak Invitational, a very large national meet hosted by the University of Minnesota.
"Minnesota will be our first race where we run our best squads," Drake said. "We will run some split squads at the Gonzaga and Sundodger meets. By the end of September we will finalize who is on our top seven."
Drake, in his sixth season leading the Cougar distance corps, starts practice in the middle of this month for both the men's and women's cross country teams. The WSU men advanced to the 2006 NCAA Championships and all but one runner from that team returns for the 2007 season. Both the Cougars men's and women's team are laden with experienced upperclassmen.
