CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Seven members of the Washington State University women's rowing team were named 2016 National Scholar-Athletes by the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), the organization announced Thursday.
Seniors Katrina Tarrant and Jordan Watson, juniors Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Jessi Howe and Isabella Watt and sophomores Jenna Mangiagli and Emily Morrow were each named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes, each having maintained a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher throughout their careers. To be eligible, each rowing student-athlete must be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility and rowed in a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races in an NCAA boat.
A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Watson is receiving the honors for her third-straight year and is a sport science major with a 3.72 GPA. Tarrant, from Creston, British Columbia, is a psychology major with a 3.69 GPA and is receiving the accolades for the second-straight year. Berindei (Cimpeni, Romania) is an accounting major with a 3.92 GPA, while Howe (Bothell, Wash.) is a Civil Engineering major with a 3.58 GPA. Both are receiving the honors for the second-straight year. Watt (Victoria, British Columbia) is picking up her first honors with a 3.53 GPA as a sport science major, while Mangiagli (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Morrow (Regina, Saskatchewan) are both receiving their first scholar-athlete honors. Mangiagli is majoring in human development with a 3.60 GPA, while Morrow is undeclared with a 3.71 GPA.
The No. 14 Cougars will begin competition at the NCAA Rowing Championships Friday, May 27. Competition runs through Sunday, May 29 at Lake Natoma at Gold River, Calif.
