Harper Third, Dodig Fourth at Pac-12 Championships

SEATTLE -- Washington State's Liz Harper finished third in the heptathlon and Dino Dodig placed fourth in the decathlon at the final day of the Pac-12 Track & Field Combined Events Championships at Husky Track in Seattle Sunday.

Harper, a junior from Missoula, Mont., tallied a lifetime-best total of 5,564 points, seventh-best in WSU all-time records. She started the day in second place and opened Sunday's performance with a long jump of 18-feet, 1 3/4 inches (5.53m) which was well under her PR of 19-8 3/4, and threw the javelin 94-6 (28.80m). Harper, also accomplished competitor in the intermediate hurdles, high jump and relays, finished the heptathlon with a PR time in the 800m of 2 minutes, 14.03 seconds.

“The long jump really killed me today,” Harper said. “But I am looking forward to next week's events especially the high jump and I am hoping I run well too.”

WSU freshman Lindsey Schauble, from Kennewick, Wash., finished in 10th place among the 14 heptathlon competitors with 4,626 points. Schauble long jumped 17-3 1/4 (5.26m), threw the javelin 103-2 (31.44m) and ran the 800m in a PR time of 2:25.07.

USC's Amalie Iuel won her second Pac-12 Heptathlon with 6,011 points while Arizona's Alyssa Thompson finished second with 5,580 points. WSU junior Alissa Brooks-Johnson, the 2015 Pac-12 heptathlon champion, received a medical recommendation late last week to not compete.

In the decathlon, Dodig, a junior from Novi Sad, Serbia, tallied 7,339 points for fourth place among the 10-men competing. Dodig started the day in fourth place with a first-day PR of 3,909 points. He ran the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.31 seconds, threw the discus 125-8 (38.31m), moved into third place after pole vaulting 15-1 (4.60m) and remained there after throwing the javelin 132-0 (40.23m). In the 10th and final event of the two-day competition, Dodig ran the 1500m in a time of 4:28.68, just 45/100s of a second off his PR time but Oregon's Joe Delgado's time of 4:17.49 gave him the two-point edge over Dodig.

Pau Tonnesen, a redshirt senior at Arizona, won back-to-back decathlon titles with 7,942 points in 2016. Oregon's Mitch Modin was second with 7,450 points and Delgado was third with7,341 points. Dodig finished fifth in the 2015 Pac-12 decathlon with a PR of 7,416 points.

“The first day was as good as I expected for my first decathlon this season,” Dodig said. “I didn't feel like I'm in my peak but my legs started waking up after the long jump. Second day I made a mistake on hurdle number seven, lost balance and completely got out of rhythm. Pole vault was good. My 1500m was a good race but too sad that (Delgado) took me down for two points. I need to work on throws much more because that's where I'm losing a lot of points.”

The women's team scores after the heptathlon are USC 14, Arizona 11, WSU 6, Colorado 6 and Washington 2. The men's team scores after the decathlon are Oregon 14, Arizona 10, WSU 5, Washington 4, UCLA 4 and Colorado 2.

“Solid second day overall,” Director of WSU Cross Country/Track & Field Wayne Phipps said. “Dino battled illness all night and then battled hard throughout the entire day. He finished with a great 1500m to put himself in a good place to advance to the NCAA finals as he is currently 16th in the nation. Liz had another great day to finish with a PR by almost a 100 points. In only her second heptathlon ever she finished with a mark that is top 20 in the nation and that puts in her a great position to advance to the NCAA finals.”

The Pac-12 Track & Field Championships continue next Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15, with the individual and relay events at Husky Track.
